The Sixth NIERTI Professional Short Course in Nutrition in Emergencies

The sixth regional Professional Short Course in Nutrition in Emergencies was run by the Asian Disaster and Preparedness Centre (ADPC) in Bangkok, Thailand from 7-18 October, 2013.

Congratulations to the 18 participants who successfully completed the course. They came with diverse backgrounds from health, nutrition, and programme management and were working in 10 countries in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East for UN agencies, governments, and NGOs.

The 11 day course contained 15 modules, ranging from preparedness to assessment and response, humanitarian standards, advocacy and communication, and included the development of a professional development plan by the participants.

The trainers and facilitators for the course came from ADPC, UNICEF, UN office for coordination of humanitarian assistance (UNOCHA), Valid International, UCL, and ENN.  The training used a wide range of training approaches with active involvement of the participants. Sessions were accompanied by case studies, exercises, role plays, presentation by the participants, video clips, and a simulation exercise set in the fictional country “Toivoland”. During the simulation, participants exercised their acquired skills and knowledge to manage a nutrition crisis caused by conflict and exacerbated by government bureaucracy.

We would like to thank all the participants, organisers, and trainers who made the course a success. We will be posting more photos from the course on our facebook page.
